The flat windy corridor between Maui's two volcanoes is home to the small town of Wailuku. Most of the island's population lives here and when visiting; tourists will find good shopping and the best dining bargains. The heart of Maui is located in this area as the local government and business community reside. Entering is venturing back in time.

There are faded wooden storefronts, old plantation homes and shops straight out of the 1950s. Most travelers will pass through on their way to the Iao Valley, but it is worth a stop to see a real place in Hawaii where people are really working on something other than a suntan.

Not only does Wailuku have a beautiful view of the Haleakala Crater, it does have interesting sights and history. There is well known bungalow architecture, a Frank Lloyd Wright building, a historic Bed and Breakfast and the Bailey House Museum. The land and surrounding area is known as a burial ground for the highest Maui chiefs and is an important site to ancient Hawaiians. Most visitors who take the time to visit are on the way to the beach or want to stop by town to do antiquing or grab a bite to eat.

Accommodations consist of a few hotels and a handful of Bed and Breakfasts. If passing few or stopping in for an afternoon is on a Maui vacation agenda, locals are warm and welcome all visitors.
