At Kaanapali Beach, Whalers Village Description: We took some friends to lunch at the Hula Grill. You can enter the restaurant either from Whalers Village shops where there is paid parking, but if you get your ticket stamped at the restaurant the first two hours are free. The other enterance is from Kaanapali Beach, where you can walk right out of the water into the Barefoot Bar and Cafe, a courtyard with tables with umbrellas, sand under your feet, and a gorgeous view. The initial table service was good; our server was attentive, bringing refills of our ice teas and soft drinks and making sure my husband had his Newcastle. It took a little while for our food to arrive, as it was the busiest part of lunch hour. However, the the salads are fast and delicious if you are in a hurry. I had the Island Fish and Chips with beer batter and lilikoi dipping sauce. The fish was mahi mahi, tasty and cooked just right. The dipping sauce tasted like sweet chili sauce, with a little extra tang from the lilikoi. My husband had a simple and flavorful Pepperoni Pizza with his Newcastle. Our friends had the Hula Cheese Burger and Fries and the Fish Sandwich. His cheeseburger was made with delicious local beef from Maui Cattle Company; never a disappointment. The fish on her sandwich was grilled ahi with aioli dressing: the ahi was a little dry, but still quite delicious, and the wheat bun a little soggy. She was dubious about the side of Mac nut slaw as it didn’t look that appetizing, but it got the big thumbs up after her first bite. We have also eaten dinner in the beach house portion of the restaurant, decorated with Hawaiiana of surfboards and hula dancers. The food was just as ono, and you can’t beat the view and the beauty of a West Maui sunset. Written By: Kit Cooley Map In This Category
