The small, quiet, down to earth town of Hana is located on the east side of Maui. Known to be paradise by locals and visitors, in and around Hana there is lush tropical rain forest, waterfalls, and red and black sand beaches. Most tourists reach Hana by taking a very well known drive on highway 36. This driving tour is about 3 hours long and follows the northeastern shore beginning from Lahaina or Kihei. Those who take this adventure will find it to be a journey with a beautiful destination. The little coastal village of Hana was discovered in 1926 and soon was sought after by a half a million people a year. There are 2500 residents who inhabit this rain forest and are mostly Hawaiian. In all of Hawaii, the road to Hana is the most celebrated.

When visitors in a rush want to see Hana in a day, they usually arrive and wonder what the fuss is all about. Those who take the time to stay will spend a great deal outdoors. It is typical to play in waterfalls, hike in the bamboo forests, view beautiful scenery and wander around in botanical gardens.

Tourists who come back to Hana are those who stay overnight and relax, watch the sun rise and spend time soaking in the Hawaiian sun. Although Hana is not known for its vast amounts of lodging options, it is oddly enough Maui's last unspoiled town to open the first resort. The inn opened in 1946 by a famous baseball team owner and gave Hana its first and last taste of tourism. Others have tried to open hotels and golf courses in the area, but Hana politely refuses. There are few Bed and Breakfasts to choose from other than the resort. Because the area is so popular, the traffic can tend to be bumper to bumper at peak times of the day. This is the perfect time to practice aloha spirit by waving, letting others pass and never honking.
