The secluded island of Lanai, once known as the "pineapple island," is rich in Hawaiian history and folklore. Lanai City, historically restored as the pineapple industry's main place of operation, still holds its rustic charm. In 1922, a pineapple grower by the name of James Dole arrived and purchased the island. Although most thought him to be mad, the industry flourished thus giving Lanai its pineapple nickname. Lanai City emerged in the early 1920_s and was invested from the Hawaiian Pineapple Company, later known as Dole. As the industry came to an end, Dole Pineapple merged with Castle and Cooke Company. A greater focus was placed on tourism and the construction of resorts and world famous golf courses were created. The island is now a resort getaway, yet still shares remnants of the past.

Centrally located on Lanai, Lanai City is situated in such a way that activities and exploring are easily accessible. Although small, tourists seek the once pineapple town for its accommodations, dining and variety of things to do and see. Each year Lanai City offers programs that provide a unique opportunity for visitors to mingle with world famous authors, filmmakers, artists and culinary experts. A weekly gathering of local vendors host a saturday market as well. Local grown vegetables, plants and a cultural mix of Hawaiian, Japanese and Filipino delicacies can be found. Gourmet restaurants are found mainly on resort grounds, but there are a few dining opportunities scattered throughout town.

If rest and relaxation are desired, Lanai City is a perfect place. If looking for fun or in search of an adventure, the activities are endless. Locals will share their Hawaiian heritage with local lei and craft making. There are numerous trails to hike and ride bikes, horseback riding, golf and pampering at the resorts. For such a small island, Lanai City has lured tourists back to its beauty, accommodations and rare Hawaiian history.
