Review

Often referred to as the place to find "the best meal on the island," Postcards Café is Nantucket cottage meets Kauai north shore-style dining.Housed in the building that was formerly the Hanalei Museum, Postcards is exceedingly charming and is one of the best places for dinner on the north shore (and the whole island). It is frequented by both locals and visitors to the island. As you walk toward the restaurant, you can let your nose lead you, as the aromas from dishes being served on the outdoor patio waft your way. Some nights, outdoor dining comes with a marvelous downpour for which the north shore of Kaua’i is famous for, offering you an unparalleled vantage point (not to worry, the outdoor seating is well-sheltered!). Inside, the atmosphere is upbeat and busy, with a high-energy and courteous wait staff, bringing meal from kitchen to table seamlessly.

There is no doubt that Postcard’s specialty are their seafood dishes (in fact, no meat or poultry are used in any of the dishes). When I dined here, guests had four fresh fish-types to choose from for the nightly special, along with three others on the standard menu. Particularly good, is the Walu, or "butter fish." The ingredients are local and fresh, and are paired nicely to offer a simple and well-rounded meal to satisfy even the most distinguished of palettes. One must-have for pupus are the Taro Fritters, served with a delicious pineapple ginger chutney. Many people come here just for these! Also a Postcards pupu exclusive are the "Seafood Rockets," a seafood mix of crab and other fish wrapped in a flaky pastry. Oh, and save room for dessert…the vegan chocolate "cheesecake" is sinfully rich and hard to believe it is made from tofu. This is a great place for the indulgent and strict health foodies alike.

Postcards is very busy, especially on weekends, so please do make reservations and since both indoor and outdoor seating are available, let them know if you have a preference. If you’re coming from the south, you’ll enjoy the drive as you cross over the old wooden bridge into Hanalei and notice the beautiful taro patches that are still grown here in Hawaiian tradition. Directions

From the south, it is the first building on your left after you cross the wooden bridge from Princeville. From the North,the restaurant lies on the southern edge of Hanalei town on your right.
