The west side of Oahu is known to be "less traveled "than other parts of the island. Just in between Makaha and Maili is a small town named Waianae. Local Hawaiians inhabit this area and appreciate the fact tourists flock to the other sections of Oahu. There are tons of things to do along this coastline. The site for the international surfing competition is in the Makaha Beach Park. The waters are known to be gentle and a secluded cove with beautiful sandy beaches is ideal for relaxing. Among all the outdoor activities in the Waianae area, a popular point of interest is the Kaneaki Heiau, a 17th century temple built for the God Lono. There is also the Kaneana Cave, a 450 foot long cavern, home of Nanaue, a son of the shark God. Travelers who stay inside Waianae's limits, will find local arts and crafts, fresh fish markets and restaurants. There is a mall and several shops to pick up Hawaiian trinkets. If seeking something more upscale, guests can play a round of golf at a well known Waianae golf course and experience fine dining with ocean views. Known as one of Hawaii's best kept secrets, Waianae and its coastline are worth the trip. Conveniently it is located less than an hour away from Honolulu and a perfect way to see Hawaii without crowds.
