From H-3 take the HI-630 exit towards Kailua. Take the Kailua ramp and merge onto Mokapu Saddle Road, follow as it becomes Mokapu Blvd and then finally becomes Mokapu Road. This will take you to Kaneohe MCBH. Description: Located along the windward side of Oahu, accessible only through Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps Base is North Beach. This rugged beach located next to housing and the base golf course, proves that there is more than just one type of beach in Hawaii. Unlike the tropical white sands of other beaches, North Beach’s appeal is its rugged shores with lava shelves that pool with water as waves pound the shoreline. This is not a beach for snorkeling or swimming, and only experienced surfers should consider entering these waters. For a sunbathing beach, consider traveling further through the base to Pyramid Rock, which has a wide expanse of sandy beach and waters that are protected by Kaneohe Bay. Instead, North Beach is a beach for marveling at Mother Nature’s ferocity as waves crash and the ocean breeze picks up. This is the beach that you want to stroll along, and be reminded of just how powerful the ocean really can be. On calmer days, between December and April, North Beach can also be an ideal spot for whale watching, as is Pyramid Rock. There are no shady spots on North beach, but that’s okay, because this is not a beach that you want to sunbathe on- this beach is for exploring! Neither beach has facilities, although for those who would like to stay near the beach, there are beachside cottages that overlook the pounding waves below. If you happen to be military, retired military or a dependent this is a breathtaking "private" beach to visit, especially when you find that you can’t differentiate one tropical beach from another and are looking for something different. North Beach’s awesome rugged beauty is something that can hardly be compared with on Oahu making it a true gem. Written By: Shiromi Arserio Map In This Category
