From Waikiki, take H1 West to the Likelike Hwy. Take the Likelike Hwy for 7 miles. Then Turn left onto Kahekili Hwy for 9 miles.
Description:
Along the windward side of Oahu, just past Kaneohe lies Kualoa Beach, a treasure in many ways. Historically, the beach is revered in Hawaiian culture. Its name means "long ancestral background" and it does indeed have a long history of importance for Hawaiian’s. The beach has long been associated with the god Lono, who provided fertility and abundance to the people. The area was also used to school the royal children of the ali’i (chiefs). But that is not the only reason to come to Kualoa. Another reason might be its magnificent beauty. In addition to having a long strip of sand, the beach also has an offshore island, 150 acres of park, and is backed by the magnificent Ko’olau Mountains.
My favorite part of Kualoa has to be Mokoli’i, otherwise known as Chinaman’s Hat, a picturesque island that stands just 600 yards from shore. Its close proximity makes it a popular place to kayak to, and more daring people have donned fins and reef shoes to "snike" (snorkel-hike) to this pretty island, although I wouldn’t advise it during high surf. That said, the shoreline is pretty well protected making it a great place for swimming. If you don’t feel like swimming there’s plenty of beach to sunbathe on, and plenty of grassy areas to hang out with friends, or just lay under the shade of a tree and doze.
Kualoa is also a great place to camp, although permits are required. The beach boasts full facilities including plenty of tables for picnics. Another thing Kualoa has is plenty of parking. I’ve visited this park on holiday weekends, and still not had too much trouble parking, nor did it feel crowded. So if you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki and explore everything else that Oahu has to offer, then Kualoa is a definite must-see.
