Description:
Although Mama’s Island Pizza hasn’t been around very long, it’s certainly making an impact in the town of Kailua. While it’s true that there aren’t many pizza joints in Kailua, Mama’s Island Pizza still stands out both for the clean friendly atmosphere and for excellent food.

Brightly lit, with lots of seating both indoors and outdoors, Mama’s Island Pizza is a welcoming place. Inside, there is big screen TV for those interested and an array of poster size pictures of beautiful Kailua beach decorates the interior. Orders are placed at the counter, and the food is delivered to your table. The menu has a wide selection of toppings for pizzas which you can get in numerous sizes including personal and pizza by the slice. Along with the usual toppings, there are more Hawaiian toppings such as Kalua pig and Portuguese sausage. The specialty pizzas are definitely not your usual fare, and have interesting names such as "pig out deluxe" (a Kalua pig pizza) and "hey brah meat delight" (made with five different types of meat) or, of course you can make up your own, with their wide list of fresh ingredients. Of course if you’re looking for a Hawaiian-themed pizza, "pig out deluxe" is definitely one to recommend, made with a delicious barbeque sauce that complements beautifully. For vegetarians, I can recommend the margherita pizza which is made with fresh basil, roma tomatoes and lots of provolone cheese. My only complaint is with the "island veggie spectacular", which, strangely, doesn’t seem to have any actual local-type vegetables on it. However, that isn’t to say that this isn’t still an excellent pizza also. All of the pizzas are deliciously doughy and, certainly for me, have just the right amount of sauce. In addition to pizzas, they also have good salad options such as their two types of Caesar salad, a vast sandwich menu and they are famous for their chicken wings.

Another thing that makes this little island pizza joint stand out from the crowd is that along with the standard soda fountain drinks, they have a healthy selection of local beers and they also serve wine. Certainly it was through Mama’s Island Pizza that this writer discovered that a glass of chardonnay perfectly complements an extra cheesy pizza. With a nice atmosphere, good prices and fast, friendly service, this little restaurant is so much more than your average fast food joint, and it is clear that it’s going to stay in the Kailua community for a long time.
