Stay on the Pali Hwy as it turns into Kailua Road. Make a slight righ onto Kuulei Road, then turn left onto Kalakeo Avenue. Description: Located just 15 miles from Waikiki, along the windward side of Oahu lies Kailua Beach Park, voted by Conde Nast publications one of the best beaches in America. With 2 ½ miles of beautiful white sand, turquoise waters, and lots of shade it is certainly easy to see why. As you face the ocean, offshore there is Flat Island, otherwise known as Popoia Island, and further to the right can be seen the twin Mokulua islands. Turn away from the beach and there are the majestic Ko’oalau mountains that make up the skyline of windward Oahu. Being the windward part of the island makes this a popular spot for water sports. Kailua beach draws windsurfers, kite boarders, boogie boarders and small sail boats. Kailua’s waters are also well known for its good kayaking, as the water is usually well protected from large swells. You can rent kayaks right on Kailua Beach, meaning you don’t have to worry about transporting it. Flat Island is a popular spot to kayak to and an excellent place to picnic. It is only a quarter of a mile away, making it an easy trip. Strong swimmers may also consider swimming out to Flat Island. Kailua is also a good place for novice snorkelers, with normally calm waters and a shallow reef that reaches all the way out to Flat Island. Beach-goers should watch out for jellyfish during the months of June through September, although this writer has never had problem with them. Kailua beach boasts full amenities, plenty of picnic tables and lots of trees for shade. Two parking lots usually provide plenty of parking, however on weekends and holidays these can fill up. In addition to the amenities on the beach, Kailua also has numerous shops and restaurants just a short walk from the beach, where people can stop for shave ice or pick up things for a picnic. The beach also has a large park, which on windy days, are filled with people flying kites. With gorgeous views and a beach that allows for a variety of different water sports, it’s easy to see why Kailua Beach is one of the best beaches in America!
