Description:
Kailua, the small town on the windward side of Oahu, is known for its gorgeous beaches and stunning views. On the weekends, locals flock to Kailua beach enjoying Kailua Bay which is world renowned for its water sports. However, for those that are looking for a quieter beach with the same white sands and stunning views, Oneawa Beach is hard to beat. Located deep within a residential area, Oneawa beach is not a beach that a lot of people come to. The reason for this is simply that despite the fact that there is no such thing as a private beach on Oahu, Oneawa happens to be located in a residential area that offers no beach access. This means that the nearest beach access is by parking at nearby Kalama Beach Park and walking, roughly a mile, to Oneawa beach. Certainly it is well worth it. Crowds dwindle the further one gets away from Kailua and Kalama Beach Parks, as mostly residents use Oneawa Beach. The beach has a seemingly endless strip of white sand, making it possible to stroll to nearby Kuahine, Kalama and Kailua Beach. The incredibly blue and calm water of Kailua Bay is an excellent spot for kayaking, snorkeling and even kite boarding. It also boasts some breathtaking views of the magnificent Ko’oalau mountain range and the equally impressive Mokulua bird sanctuary islands.

Unlike Kailua Beach Park, Oneawa beach has very little in the way of shady spots, nor does it have life guards. There are also no facilities but since Kalama Beach Park is just a mile away, that doesn’t pose a huge problem. For those looking to enjoy magnificent Kailua Bay without any of the weekend crowds, and who don’t mind a little bit of walking, Oneawa Beach is certainly a gem.
