Description:
Located along the windward side of Oahu, opposite Ahupua'a O Kahana State Park, Kahana Beach Park is one of the closest I have ever come to actually finding a secluded beach on Oahu. Often overlooked by most tourists who pass by it on their way to the nearby Polynesian Cultural Centre or to the numerous surf spots on the North Shore, Kahana Beach Park is the true gem of windward Oahu.

Parking is plentiful here and camping is also allowed, with permit. My only complaint is with the facilities. The restroom consisted of a port-a-potty, which is not always kept clean, and, at the time of writing this piece, there were enclosures with plumbing for showers but the water was not turned on.

The beach itself is a cove fronting Kahana Valley, which provides a glorious mountain backdrop. The water is extremely calm, making for good swimming. Even so, this is a beautiful beach. The calm water makes it perfect for kayaking the bay and for those who wish to do more kayaking, there is the nearby Kahana Stream. However, snorkelers beware: runoff from Kahana Stream makes for limited visibility in the bay. Keep an eye out overhead for paragliders as they soar over the water, eventually landing on this semi-deserted beach.

Kahana Beach Park also has plenty of trees and shady spots close to the shore, when you don’t want to be directly in the sun. There are also picnic tables scattered all around the beach park. Both of the times that I have visited this beach I have not seen more than a dozen people there, and these were on weekends! The rarity of such an un-crowded beach on Oahu makes Kahana Beach Park one of the nicest beaches on the island.
