Description:
One local treat that is worth trying is shave ice, and nobody does it better than Waiola Shave Ice and Bakery located just outside of Waikiki. Shave ice (note: shave ice, not shaved ice) is a local favorite, similar to a snow cone, but instead of the ice being crushed, it is shaved. What makes Waiola the best on the island for shave ice? Nowhere on Oahu can you find shave ice as fine as this. The ice is shaved so finely, it almost has the consistency of snow. In addition, Waiola has over 40 different flavors of syrup with such exotic flavors as lychee, lilikoi (passion fruit) and li hing mui (a type of Chinese preserved plum), as well as more conventional flavors like strawberry. In addition to the numerous flavors are numerous toppings that you can get with your shave ice. For instance, ice cream at the bottom of your shave ice is a real treat, as is the mochi balls (a Japanese rice cake) and azuki beans (a Japanese sweet bean). While you’re at it, why not have your shave ice topped with some condensed milk or a snow cap?

Waiola also has a bakery serving a variety of items including Portuguese donuts known as malasadas and other local baked goods. Waiola Shave Ice and Bakery has no actual parking, which can be a problem, however, it is well worth the extra effort. In addition to this location, there is the original Waiola Shave Ice located on 2135 Waiola St. There is more parking at this location, however they do not have the bakery or the seating that the Waikiki location has. While Waiola may not be as famous as its North Shore counterparts, nowhere can you find shave ice this fine. That, coupled with cheap prices, and its easy access locations in Honolulu makes this place a must-do for visitors and locals alike.
