Description:
It's not easy to locate Le Guignol, one of the few authentic French restaurants on Oahu. The main restaurant entrance is located off the back parking lot which connects to mainly office and other commercial space. Even seeing the correct parking entrance can be a bit of a challenge due to the lack of street lights. The restaurant isn't big or glitzy, there are no neon signs welcoming all passing patrons. But part of Le Guignol's appeal is directly attributable to this subtle, yet fulfilling dining experience. The restaurant is cozy with about 15 tables, three of which are on the patio area. The decor is absolutely quaint and rustic. There's a small, yet highly personable staff, offering detailed and effective attention to each patron. The heartbeat of Le Guignol is leisurely and hospitality reigns.

The restaurant's personal attention to customer service corresponds to the chef's intimate touches to his dishes. You won't be able to find many other establishments offering tender escargot in garlic butter or a smooth foie gras, goose liver served with pineapple guacamole and sesame seed. A healthy bowl of the flavorful French onion soup is the most popular starter. Don't forget to save room for the entree. There are classic French dishes such as the Les Saint-Jacques a la Champenoise, tender sea scallops blanketed between two thin layers of light pastry or the simpler Veal Sweetbreads with a light cream sauce. A local favorite with a French touch is the Pan-Roasted Opakapaka (Hawaiian pink snapper) filleted with anchovies, artichokes and lentils. Le Guignol's also serves tender meat dishes such as the rack of lamb and a filet mignon, in a rich dark sauce sprinkled with green peppercorns.

How about the wine list? Well unfortunately, due to a nearby grade school, Le Guignol doesn't have a liquor license. The staff seemed apologetic about this minor inconvenience. However, the restaurant charges a nominal corkage fee so guests are encouraged to BYOW (Bring Your Own Wine). Additionally, Le Guignol is located two blocks from the Blaisdell Concert Center making it an ideal prelude to a festive evening. Although prices may be a bit higher when compared to similar restaurants, Le Guignol is truly a gem employing an intimate staff and emphasizing labor-intensive meals. Reservations are accepted and don't forget to call them for directions before you depart!
