Directly south of Downtown Honolulu on Ala Moana Boulevard in the Aloha Tower Marketplace. Description: Don Ho's is still a name to reckon with in Hawaii. Don Ho's restaurant is by Downtown Honolulu in between Waikiki and the airport. It is inside the popular Aloha Tower Marketplace: an ocean-front harbor for several sunset cruises catering to locals and tourists. The restaurant is exactly what you would expect: lots of tropical décor with surf boards, palm trees, tiki torches and lots of Don Ho memorabilia. Keep in mind this is not where the Don Ho Show plays and Don's personal appearances here are infrequent and unpredictable. A popular area of the restaurant is the outdoor bar and dining area near the prime waterfront location. Although, you may not see Don Ho, there's likely a more contemporary group playing, one that draws a crowd of local Hawaiian music buffs. Entertainment is provided every night. Thursdays through Saturdays are especially exciting for the younger crowd as Don Ho turns into an energetic bar scene and dance floor with a live DJ. The bar menu is playful, especially with items named the "Suck em up Mai Tai" or the "Hard Carved Coconut Monkey." The food is average and includes popular plates such as the coconut shrimp, kahlua quesadilla and chopped steak. Some of the food is supposed to be fun (pizzas served on surfboards atop pineapple juice cans) but it just seems too retro. Don Ho's advertises one of the best Sunday brunches on the island. They will generally be filled with tables of local families. Guests have two options, buffet or menu service. The buffet is a basic luau including kahlua pork, prime rib, fish, salads and various pupus. A real winner among the locals is the "moko loco which is also known as a surfer's comfort food; it is bowls of rice topped with ground beef, egg, and brown gravy. If you're in the area, Don Ho's food and bar is a great option especially if you're looking to catch up on some breathtaking sunsets by the harbor. Written By: John Kim Map In This Category
