Description:
When seeking out unique island flavors and style, all roads lead to this Mo’ili’ili restaurant. Many have tried to duplicate the flavors and ambiance of this master chef’s skill and style, but few have yet to come close. A product of local culinary training and clearly and island boy at heart, Alan Wong has won many accolades and awards for putting Hawaii Regional Cuisine on the map. Today he is the master of several restaurants across the globe but this one on King Street is where his island roots are true blue.

Visitors to Hawaii may be inclined expect a grand entrance crowded with fancy cars and limousines, but that is not truly island style. More understated than flashy that reaches far beyond the typical tourist trappings, you will find the entrance to this restaurant almost non-descript and especially easy to miss if you get distracted by the traffic at the busy McCully street intersection.

The elevator opens on the third floor restaurant into a setting that is relaxed, laid back and casually elegant with predominately neutral colors and an open kitchen. Both the glassed-in terrace and views of Manoa Valley are particularly enjoyable. The restaurant at times is busy and sometimes very lively, and the service is attentive, courteous and accommodating. But by far, it’s the fusion of contemporary and classic local island flavors that makes this eatery shine.

The menu is full of fresh, interesting and perhaps unusual combinations but all are sure to entice and excite. Selections include kalua pig served with steamed clams and spinach, macadamia nut and coconut crusted lamb chops, fine fresh fish selections that include onaga, opakapaka and mahimahi. Although ordering ‘ala carte" can quickly get expensive, so the restaurant also offers two types of sampling menus that fill you up, make you happy all without breaking the bank.

One of the finest restaurants in the islands a trip to Alan Wong’s is definitely a memorable experience of contemporary local atmosphere, flavors and hospitality. One hardly needs sunset views, torches and sea breezes to know this restaurant is special.
