Take H1E until it ends and becomes Kalanianole Highway. Park at the blowhole which is the second lookout past Hanauma Bay. Take the steps to the left down to the cove. Description: While most of everyone who visits the island of Oahu goes to Halona Blowhole, very few of those same people visit the nearby Halona Cove, aside from perhaps peering over the south side of the look out at Halona Blowhole to look at the small cove below. This tiny little beach is among the most famous on the island. In 1953 it was the site of a famous love scene from the movie From Here to Eternity. Back then, Oahu had much less visitors than they have today. Now the cove is considered something of a fishbowl, so I would definitely not recommend trying to reenact the scene on that beach. With visitors to the nearby Halona Blowhole peering down from above, there is very little privacy here. This does not, however, mean that this is not a beach well worth visiting. In fact, this is amongst the nicest beaches that this Oahu-based writer has visited. You can get to Halona Cove by parking at the blowhole and taking the somewhat steep steps down to the beach below. I think it is this climb up and down that puts off a lot of visitors making for a surprisingly quiet beach, considering it is right next to one of the most visited sites on the island. At the cove, you’ll find a beautiful semi-circle of sand, perfect for sunbathing. On the days that I’ve visited the beach, it’s been fairly comfortable, however, the cove has very little in the way of shade, so it would be advisable to bring a beach umbrella with you, if you plan to be there a while. The water here is an incredible shade of blue, and when it is calm, is a perfect spot for swimming. The cove is also a great place for boogie boarding, when there’s a little bit of surf, although if you decide to go into the water here, you should be aware that there is no lifeguard at Halona Cove and when the waves are really crashing, you can find yourself thrust against nearby rocks. If you’re not in the mood for sunbathing or going in the water there are also plenty of rocks and lava ledges to climb out to, which can take you further away from the beach, and make an excellent spot for viewing sea turtles. For some reason, this spot is a particular favorite for turtles who, when there’s surf, seem to particularly enjoy riding the waves. If you can get past the occasional tourist looking down at you, Halona Cove is a spectacular spot to visit. And if you’re just visiting the blowhole and you see this little cove, don’t be afraid to come down. You’ll probably find that you’ll like it. Written By: Shiromi Arserio Map In This Category
