Description:
Everyone in the United States and worldwide were affected by the December 7th attack on Pearl Harbor which took 2,388 military and civilian personnel the lives. A total of 21 vessels and 170 planes were lost or damaged. Today the historical and solemn memorial attracts visitors from all over the world. A visit to the memorial is well worth the time, but allow most, if not all of the day to fully enjoy it and the other nearby attractions.

With more than a million visitors a year, the Arizona memorial is the most visited attraction in Hawaii. A visit here is well worth the 45 minute drive from Waikiki, the crowded conditions, the long lines and the island’s tropical heat. The tickets and the parking is free but there is only a limited number of each available each day, so it’s best to arrive early, and to have lots of patience. The visitor experience includes a 23 minute presentation of the events on that day and a visit to the memorial itself via water shuttle.

There are a few things to keep in mind to insure a smooth visit to the the Memorial. First thing is to remember is attire, this place is a memorial cemetery and respect is expected. Offensive t-shirts or bathing suits are not allowed, neither are military BDU’s. Another is that although cameras are allowed in the visitor’s center an on the memorial most other items including purses, handbags, fanny packs, backpacks, camera bags, diaper bags, luggage are not. Storage areas for these items are located adjacent to the parking lot and their use it highly recommended. Cell phones are to remain off from the beginning of the presentation until the shuttle returns to the visitor’s center.

Since the waiting time for the presentation can be as long as 3 hours during busy summer months, be sure to queue up for a ticket to the presentation and memorial visit immediately upon arrival. Once tickets are in hand, there will be ample time to wander about the visitor center. If the waiting time is significant, consider visiting the neighboring USS Bowfin Submarine, USS Missouri Battleship or even the nearby Aloha Stadium Swap Meet which is open on weekends and Wednesdays.

Once the presentation is completed, visitors are asked to board the water shuttle to the memorial. The short ride across Pearl Harbor is subdued, respectful and solemn and offers wonderful views Ford Island, nearby Aiea, the of course, Pearl Harbor which seems forever buzzing with military activity.

The sleek white memorial is built across the still oil leaking sunken hull of the USS Arizona. The structure is by no means large or ornate, but it’s modern and clean design projects a feeling of peace, hope and tranquility and respect. Remains of crewmembers who were assigned to the USS Arizona on December 7, 1941 are still being interred today. Last presentation is held at 3pm daily. Closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.
