The city of Honolulu is divided into different sections. The east side of town transforms into the Diamond Head or the Waikiki area. Just beyond this section of the city is a small community called Hawaii Kai. Located 25 minutes from Waikiki, it is a residential area and largest of several communities on the eastern side of the island.
Henry Kaiser was responsible for developing Hawaii Kai and the area is known for its ancient Maunalua fishponds and wetlands. A marina was dredged from one of the ponds starting around 1959. From this a land owner developed 521 acres into residential areas and commercial properties. Today there are many vacation rentals and bed and breakfast type of accommodations. There are three large shopping centers with numerous restaurants of all ethnic cuisine's, shops, markets and movie theaters. Most tourists visit for water sport activities such as diving, parasailing, jet skiing and snorkeling is minutes away at Hanauma Bay. The two main beaches which are the closest are Sandy Beach and Makapuu Beach. The area is well known for its hiking as Diamond Head is also minutes away and offers spectacular views. Hawaii Kai neighborhoods extend into several of the valleys and up into the separating ridges. The area is very low key and is advised for travelers who want more peace and quiet instead of the hustle and bustle of Honolulu. Photo Credit:
