Description:
Still more of a concept than an established trail, the Pearl Harbor Historic Trail has huge potential for the leeward Oahu area. It officially begins at the Halawa landing near the USS Arizona Memorial Visitor’s Center and ends at Waipahu.

Even in the current state of limited maintenance, the trail is used daily by joggers, bikers and walkers. The trail runs generally uninterrupted and level for miles in an area that filled with numerous intersections, traffic and hilly terrain. At the beginning of the trail, the general area filled with hoards of tourists, buses and trolleys who gather early in the day to visit the area attractions that include the USS Arizona, the USS Bowfin submarine, USS Missouri and more recently, the Pacific Aviation Museum. The trail begins in just off the main visitor center entrance behind the parking lot and luggage storage facility. The area has a definite military presence, and offers wonderful views of the USS Arizona Memorial and Ford Island on one side and views of Aloha Stadium on the other.

For the most part the trail follows the harbor’s edge past military housing, behind shops, car lots and restaurants and parks. Contact with crossing traffic and other pedestrian obstacles are at a minimum, although the trail in some areas can benefit from some serious debris removal. The views of the harbor are unique and include glimpses of several historic points along the edge of Ford Island in the distance.

The future plans for the trail are grand and include an extension from Waipahu onward along the Leeward Coast for a total of nineteen miles. It will feature many area cultural and historic landmarks.
