Review

Located in the heart of suburban Waipahu, the 50 acre Waipahu Cultural Garden Park includes the interpretive grounds and buildings of the Hawaiian Plantation Village. The only Oahu museum dedicated to the memory of the immigrant laborers who came to work in the vast sugar plantations of Hawaii from about 1900 to 1946. These many ethnic groups brought and modified their varied traditions as each became an integral part of Hawaiian culture. Set about the grounds are a collection of lovingly restored buildings each representing a "day in the life" of a specific ethnic group. Pathways connecting the buildings and interpretive sites pass through plantings demonstrating crops, home gardens, and native plants.

Your first stop should be the museum to check the tour schedule and get oriented to the Village. The displays here illustrate the tools and life styles at the heart of the immigrant experience. An appropriately educational gift shop is also a good stop. The highlights for each person will vary. With a dozen ethnic groups included in the museum, many visitors will feel a personal connection with the stories that begin to reveal themselves.

There will be some unexpected delights while touring the grounds including the Sumo ring, the Portuguese bread oven, and the Inari (Shinto shrine). You could comfortably walk through the site in only 30 minutes but the tours take a relaxing and informative hour or so. At the heart of this experience is the love and tenderness that went into creating and sustaining the Village. Conceived by the descendents of the workers, the museum and village are a testament to the struggles and ultimate success of the people that followed this arduous pathway into a better life. Follow your kama'aina guides "on a journey into the past, retelling the plantation story, a story of triumph over great hardships, sacrifice to create a new community."
