Review

On the windward side of Oahu, just minutes away from Honolulu lies Makapuu Beach Park. With its crashing waves, the beach is famous for body surfing and boogie boarding. Makapuu was also the site of the first ever championship body surfing competition that began in 1953.

Makapuu is a mecca for body surfers and boogie boarders all around Honolulu, and they flock to this little beach. But don’t worry about the beach being too packed. The boogie boarders will all be in the water! If you plan to do a bit of surfing yourself, note that long boards are not allowed on this beach. Even if you’re not interested in body surfing it’s still a fun place to sit and watch the boogie boarders. It’s not a beach for swimming; the waves are much too powerful for that. On days when the waves are smaller, it can be fun to go in the water, but even with small waves, the ocean can toss you about quite a bit. Body surfing isn’t the only site to see here. There are also beautiful views of the offshore island, Manana (otherwise known as Rabbit Island) and Kaohikaipu (Black Rock). You can also see Makapuu lighthouse, which has a trail that you can hike. To the left of the beach is a huge lava ledge, which is another fun place to watch the surf and play in the tide pools. It serves as a reminder of how the chain of Hawaiian Islands was formed.

A small cove of golden sand, Makapuu has little in the way of shady spots. But cooling ocean spray can make up for that, although be careful if you’re lying in the sand, as stray waves can wash over you with little warning. Makapuu beach features full facilities along with picnic tables. Parking can be somewhat limited although you can park along the road that winds down to the parking lot. With wonderful views and incredible wave action, whether you boogie board or not, Makapuu is a really fun beach to visit.

Directions

Take H-1E and continue until it becomes Kalanianaole Hwy (about 12 miles. Beach entrance is just across from Sea Life Park.
