Review

Lanikai beach, located 15 miles away from Honolulu, on the windward side of Oahu, is the kind of picture-postcard tropical beach that most people imagine when they think of Hawaii. Voted by the Travel Channel as the #1 beach in Hawaii, and featured in numerous photo shoots, Lanikai beach certainly does not disappoint. And with mile long golden sands perfect for sunbathing, beautiful clear turquoise water and two offshore islands in the background, it is easy to see why the word Lanikai translates to mean "heavenly sea".

The beautiful bird sanctuary islands are known collectively as Mokulua which means "two islands". The bigger one is actually called Moku Nui while the smaller island is called Moku Iki. The clear waters of Lanikai beach just beg to be explored, making it a perfect place for snorkeling. While the water can be a little cloudy at times, there are coral reefs located offshore with depths of up to 15 feet, and numerous small fish, all of which is located along a stretch of water between Kualima Drive and Haukea Drive. The water is usually calm, although you might want to be on the look out for windsurfers, as this is a popular sport in the area. Another popular sport on this beach is kayaking. For a good place to launch your kayak, try the stretch of sand near Kualima Drive.

My only complaint about this gorgeous beach is that it lacks facilities. There are no restrooms or showers, and while there are lots of palm trees, they provide very little shade. In addition, there is no actual parking lot. Instead, you must simply look for parking on Mokulua Street, a residential road, and walk to one of the beach access points located sporadically in between homes. But if you want to go to one picture-postcard beach on Oahu, and don’t want to have to travel far, then this is the perfect beach.
