Review

Located on the northern end of windward Oahu, Kokololio is a hidden gem of a beach park. The park features a large area for parking, and also has shower and restroom facilities. Camping is also allowed, with permit. The beach park's rolling bluffs with numerous trees and shady spots, makes it perfect for picnics.

The waves are tiny in comparison to nearby surf spot, La’ie Beach Park (more commonly known as Pounders Beach) however these waves can make for uncertain swimming conditions, particularly in the winter time. Snorkeling is possible here and there is a nearby reef wall that can attract numerous fish, however be aware that the constant wave action can make for poor viewing and is perhaps best left for the more experienced snorkelers. Kokololio also seems to be a popular spot for beginner boogie boarders as the waves are not very big and break about 10 feet from shore.

With 16 acres of beach park, Kokololio is a beautiful place to just stroll along the beach. The sand is quite porous here, sometimes causing you to sink an inch or two as you walk, and watch for the tiny crabs as they scurry across the beach to their holes. It should be noted that a surprising variety of debris has washed up on this beach, however the water is clear and the debris itself seems to be restricted to the bottom of the bluffs and does not obstruct beach strolling or sunbathing. In addition, I visited the beach on a weekend, and was surprised to find only about 30 people enjoying the 16 acres of beach park, making it one of the more secluded beaches on the island and a welcome change to the hustle and bustle of Waikiki.

From Waikiki take H-1 to the Likelike Hwy exit. Turn left onto HI-83 and follow for 14 miles.
