Review

Located in a quiet neighborhood of Wahiawa, this shrine once had many visitors from throughout the Hawaiian Islands but is less frequently visited today. Though small and uncrowded, it is a wonderful site to visit and to reflect on a far different time in the not too distant past.

In the traditions of native Hawaiians, the birth of royalty was followed by a mystical rain. This healing rain fell freely on the people who lived and worked in this region. The Keanianileihuaokalani (the healing stone) absorbed this mystical rain which led to its ability to transmit healing powers to those in need. At one time the healing stone resided in the fields of the nearby Ku kaniloko Royal Birthing Stones (see article also included on this web site). Every rain was considered important and the healing stone received this almost daily replenishment of sacred waters.

A visit to this site is unique among sacred Hawaiian locations, in that visitors are invited to participate in the reverential sustaining of the stone. Because a well intentioned protective white masonry enclosure has been built over the stone, it now can no longer be naturally renewed by the sacred rains. To aid the stone, visitors are encouraged to anoint it with rainwater captured in coconut shell cups and kept next to the stone. When the coconut cups are emptied, you are requested to leave them outside the shrine, that they may be refilled naturally with the next rain.

Visitors are allowed to leave, with respect, offerings of awa root, olena sprigs, native herbs, leis, or flowers. They are asked not to place other objects or material here, and especially not to rub oil (common in other cultures) on the stone, explaining that this seals it, and prevents it from breathing or properly receiving renewal from the rain water.

This is a small quiet shrine, that provides a rare and unique exposure to native Hawaiian customs and beliefs.
