Review

For the locals in Kailua, Lucy’s Grill ‘N Bar is one of those popular little hot spots that is always bustling and where the food is always excellent. Lucy’s is probably one of the most popular restaurants in Kailua, and it shows. Most nights the restaurant is filled with crowds of locals just hanging out together and eating good food. The waiters, while friendly, bustle about. Outside, tiki torches light up a pretty lanai area featuring lots of outdoor seating and an open-air bar. The lanai is an excellent option for seating if you’re looking for something a little quieter and more intimate. It’s no secret that Lucy’s can be a little noisy inside, although that is just part of its charm. The atmosphere at Lucy’s is casual, as is the dress code. Inside the restaurant you can find dark wood furniture juxtaposing against fish tanks and surf boards. And if Hawaiian artifacts don’t give you enough to look at while you’re waiting for your meal, the cooks in the open kitchen also put on quite a show.

As for the food, portions are probably the number one thing you’ll come away from Lucy’s remembering. They are huge, and you’ll almost certainly be taking home leftovers. Lucy’s truly is value for money. Serving American cuisine with a Hawaiian twist, you’ll definitely find something unique to eat here. For instance, for an appetizer, try the Kalua pig pizza or the Ahi Tower, which is literally a tower of sushi rice, fish, avocado, hot wasabi and nori. For entrées, the braised lamb shanks, made with a macadamia nut crust is excellent. The Rib Eye steak made with a Hawaiian salt crust is also quite popular, as is any of the numerous fresh fish on the menu. If you have any room left for dessert, then I would recommend either the crème brulee which is made with Tahitian vanilla bean or their rich chocolate soufflé cake. Be aware though, like the rest of the menu, portions are big, so perhaps consider splitting a dessert instead. A good wine list rounds out the menu at Lucy’s Bar ‘N Grill, making it an excellent place to eat and visit with friends and family. Lucy’s is only open for dinner, and reservations are highly recommended. If you’re looking for a place in Kailua where the locals hang out and where you can get good Hawaiian-American food, then this is the place to go.
