Review

The city of Honolulu has many restaurants serving all kinds of different food. Particularly in abundance is authentic Chinese food, versus the usual Chinese-American take out found on the mainland. One place that particularly stands out for its authentic Chinese food is the Maple Garden. Tucked away on Isenberg, in the middle of Honolulu, near the University of Hawaii, the restaurant has a very unassuming air. Inside, you’ll find a dimly restaurant with lots of ornate oriental carvings, beautiful glassware and some spectacular murals of wild horses that, surprisingly, does not look out of place in this little restaurant. Lining one wall, you’ll see a large collection of photos of customers that have eaten here over the years, proving that this restaurant has been a part of the community for a while, and is certainly not going anywhere.

Despite the popularity of the Maple Garden, I found service to be surprisingly quick and friendly, and the place wasn’t too crowded either, which owes much to the fact that the restaurant does seem to have a large amount of seating space. The Maple Garden is famous for its Szechuan-style cuisine. Consider trying the Chinaman’s Hat, one of their more popular cuisines. Named after an off-shore island located on the windward side of Oahu, the Chinaman’s Hat is mu shu pork served with vegetables to be placed in a kind of pancake, eaten, as the waitress described it "burrito style". If that doesn’t appeal to you, you’ll almost certainly find something that does. The spicy garlic eggplant is another popular dish and, frankly, delicious as are the garlic green beans. In addition, they serve a Mandarin-style brunch on the weekends which is also very popular.

If you find yourself in the neighborhood with a craving for some real Chinese food, don’t hesitate to consider Maple Garden. With fabulous food in large portions and reasonable prices, it’s easy to see why this little restaurant has stayed in business for over 30 years.
