Review

Malasadas are a type of Portuguese donut. It is not clear when they were first brought over to Hawaii, but most certainly they are synonymous with Leonards bakery, who made them popular again back in the fifties, and easily do the very best malasadas on the island. The main bakery is located in the heart of Waikiki. However, all over the island you will see Leonards bakery trucks, usually parked in front of shopping malls. And in case you're wondering, they bake the malasadas right there in the truck, and are easily as good as those found in the actual bakery.

Lighter and less dense than a regular donut, malasadas are like donuts but with the holes intact, that are fried (and so much better eaten while still hot). You can get them covered with cinnamon sugar, or regular sugar. In addition, you can get them filled with either chocolate or haupia, which is a kind of coconut filling. Be aware though; filled malasadas are not like you're usual filled donut. There is no skimping on filling for these donuts. Instead, they can be quite messy, so remember to bring lots of napkins!

Naturally, Leonards makes all kinds of Portuguese baked goods. Definitely try their hot cross buns, which are delicious or their malasada puffs. However, it is their original malasadas which are what people keep coming back for more. Buy them by the box or individually; they are delicious and cheap, making them a yummy breakfast or dessert. Whether you are able to make it down to their original Waikiki store, or happen to see one of their many Leonards bakery trucks roaming the island, be sure to stop by and have some malasadas as they are definitely a must-do!
