Located next door to it’s immensely popular dim sum sister restaurant at the Chinese Cultural Plaza in downtown Honolulu’s Chinatown, this small restaurant has a huge reputation for being one of the finest vegetarian restaurants on the island. Open only for lunch and closed on Wednesdays, this casual restaurant is located in a modest corner in the back of the Cultural Plaza along River Street.

The area just outside the restaurant fronting the river is popular with older folks who gather to play cards or chess and other games to past the time. Also nearby are multitude of stores, family run grocery stores, fresh flower lei stands and a multitude of bars and fresh fish stands The Chinatown area is busy especially in the mornings and through the lunch hour when market goers gather their fresh groceries from nearby family run stalls and business people from nearly financial area converge for lunch and to take in the Asian ambiance and cultural uniqueness of the area.

The vegetarian menu and the creative flair is what makes this restaurant a local favorite with area residents, the business crowd from nearby downtown, island vegans and the diet conscious. The menu is innovative and has a fresh flavorful perspective on using a wide variety of fresh vegetables and other ingredients to make a truly tasty experience where chicken, beef or pork are never missed. The menu is varied and interesting and includes items like stir-fried Chinese broccoli, braised curry tofu, stir-fried eggplant with oyster mushrooms and a delectable and silky mango pudding that is not to be missed.

Parking can be a challenge especially during the noon hours, but with some patience inexpensive parking can be found at the Plaza parking lot or in metered parking stalls located along nearby River or Maunakea street or North Kukui Street or the city bus stops frequently along nearby North Beretania St. Be sure to arrive early since there is almost always a line during the lunch hour and seats at this popular spot are few and far between for late arrivers.

Directions

From the H1 freeway eastbound, take the Pali Hwy exit and turn rightat the light. Turn right on Vineyard Blvd and left onto Maunakea St and continue across North Kukui St. The Chinese Cultural Center parking lot entrance will be on the right.

If you are looking for a vegetarian restaurant, Dim Sum style, this is the place to go. Their food is good and the prices are great.
