Review

Hardly space for more than a counter and a couple of small tables, this small sushi stand is noted for being the first to bring Japanese style sushi to Hawaii. To find it, be sure to not speed down South King Street and be in the left lane to quickly turn in to the small strip mall’s parking lot. But be warned, the parking in the area surrounding the small storefront can be non-existent a lot of the time. Circling through and round the adjacent retail shops is always expected for those who aren’t lucky enough to happen on a vacant space.

Everyone who enters this store is greeted in typical Japanese fashion, and ordering is done over the counter by standing in an informal line and waiting your turn. The service is friendly, but service can be terribly slow especially during the lunch and dinner hours. It’s always better to call ahead if possible.

The menu consists of a stronghold of sushi standards of nigiri, inari, maki, and more. Larger orders are arranged in platters and in take away boxes and the presentations are always colorful and appetizing.

The hand rolled or Temaki sushi is what stands out here. Generous sized rolls are presented in special cellophane wrappers that require a re-rolling of the crisp nori before eating. This results in a crispy texture and bite that most other sushi places on the island are yet to master. Of course, there are other items that are also enjoyable, the donburi or rice bowls are a newer addition to the menu. The Shrimp Tempura Don is especially flavorful, but doesn’t match up to a traditional donburi usually found in larger Japanese restaurants. One other special is the SPAM sushi, after all it is Hawaii and everyone knows how popular SPAM is in the 50th state. It’s worth a small taste, a very small taste at the very least.
