Review

Almost all patrons leaving Cafe Sistina discuss two common topics: one, the impressive restaurant decor and two, the delightful authentic Italian cuisine. Ornamented with murals painted by the restaurant's talented chef, Cafe Sistina is a favorite, charming eatery for Italian cuisine. Italian born Sergio Mitrotti is an artist, apparently both with a paint brush and in the kitchen. In between Waikiki and Downtown Honolulu, he has transformed an otherwise unremarkable storefront to a glowing restaurant by painting almost every flat surface with murals reminiscent of the Sistine Chapel.

Beyond likable, this is a relentlessly stylish place, from the young, energetic staff (several of whom speak perfect Italian) dressed in designer T-shirts to the sharp Italian glassware. The colored plate settings which complement the walls covered in Renaissance frescos is also impressive. Equally chic is Cafe Sistina's menu which is divided into three parts --- the "grandmother’s" cuisine (traditional), "mother’s" cuisine (modern Italian) and Chef Mitrotti's own specialties (innovative/contemporary). The traditional brushetta and veal al barolo dishes are popular, but among the last group, try such exotic fare as the fresh mango fettuccine with shrimp, and asparagus ravioli with a sweet vermouth cream sauce. The wine list is plentiful but if you have a special bottle in mind that Sistina doesn't carry, the corkage fee is nominal.

Due to the favorable word-of-mouth reviews, this restaurant is quickly becoming very popular and at times difficult to obtain a table at. Reservations are highly recommended. Sistina's popularity may be contributing to the faster dining tempo than one might expect where your salad or appetizer is quickly followed by an entree before you may have a chance to fully appreciate every last bite. However, the energetic staff also makes sure they provide personal attention to provide that intimate touch at this highly recommended locale.
