Review

This beach park borders the extensive Kapiolani Park which is located on the other side of Kalakaua Avenue away from the beach. Kapiolani Beach begins at the Kuhio beach breakwater, also called the groin, at the end of Kapahulu Avenue. Walking south out of the hustle and bustle of Waikiki an entirely different beach experience opens up before you.

Locals and visitors "in the know" come here to enjoy a more casual and peaceful setting. Though the beach is an important feature of this long thin park, it is the trees, lawns, and shade that are possibly its most enjoyed feature. The further from Waikiki you wander the quieter and more peaceful the atmosphere. Here you can enjoy a soothing rest, a picturesque picnic, or even a possible midday nap.

Kapiolani Beach is the beach closest to Waikiki, however the name often refers to the series of beaches south of Waikiki including: Queens or Surf Beach, Sans Souci Beach, and the Outrigger Canoe Club beach. Along this stretch of coastline the beach is intermittently interrupted by resorts, the Waikiki Aquarium, and the fascinating War Memorial Natatorium. This massive structure, built in 1927 as a memorial to soldiers of World War I and including an Olympic sized swimming pool has beautiful arches and an intricate façade that glows in the sunset and evening lights.

Though the beach may be steep and narrow, the waves are generally small and many people consider it one of their favorite swimming beaches. Somewhat offshore The Public is an area popular with local surfers. The waters in this area are also a Nature Preserve and provide without doubt the best snorkeling in the Waikiki area with tropical fish encounters almost guaranteed.

The beach park is isolated primarily between a large urban park and the Pacific Ocean, so there aren’t as many attractions or distractions as elsewhere. This is a good park in which to splash in the ocean, stroll along a walkway, rest in the shade, picnic and barbecue, or just enjoy the sunset. Make Kapiolani Park Beach a destination or include it on a longer loop with a walk through the Kapiolani lawns and gardens across the street.
