Review

A visit to the Honolulu Zoo is like stepping into another world, or rather like traveling around the world. Inside you’ll find a selection of wildlife from around the globe, set in groupings mimicking their natural environments. From an African Savannah to an island of lemurs this relatively small 50 acre zoo packs a lot of experience into its location. You’ll find a wide assortment of animals to see from butterflies to giraffes, and frogs to hippos. Many of the animals on display are endangered and reflective of the zoo’s commitment to global conservation measures.

When to visit the zoo poses an interesting question. Not only is the zoo open for typical daytime visits but there are a wealth of opportunities for special visits to the zoo at all hours of the day and the night. Geared for adults, children, family, or future zoo staff; the changing programs will give you an almost unlimited selection of ways to enjoy any number of visits. Here are just a few examples: Star Gazing at the Zoo, Evening Concert, Snooze in the Zoo, Breakfast with a Keeper, Zooper Birthday Parties, Junior Zookeeper, and my favorite, The Twilight Tour.

Aside from the entertainment and simple enjoyment of seeing the animals, you can also learn quite a bit about their behaviors, status in the wild, and things you can do to help preserve their dwindling populations. While looking at the wild dog pups born at the zoo, I learned that no two dogs have identical patterns but close family relatives have similar coloration.

You can also enjoy the zoo from outside the walls. It’s fascinating to walk out of the bright nighttime lights and sounds of Waikiki into the cool quiet darkness of Kapiolani Park and hear hyenas, birds, or some unknown monkey howling. The next day when I visited the zoo it only took a couple of answers to some excellent questions for a zoo keeper to lead me directly to the animal that I had heard the night before. And best of all, I didn’t have to be embarrassed trying to imitate the animal’s call. The zoo and the staff are very people oriented, not only with special assistance and answering questions but they’ll even allow you to bring your own picnic into the zoo (just be careful to dispose of your trash so no animals are harmed). Have you ever had a picnic with a lion?

Aside from everything else, the zoo provides a lush, quiet refuge from much of the excitement and sometimes overpowering sights and sounds just outside the walls. Enjoy a seat in a tropical jungle, or maybe you’d rather be in the African savannah? Whatever your excuse, enjoy one or more of the many ways to visit the Honolulu Zoo. After all, haven’t you heard? "It’s all happening at the Zoo."
