Review

This beach is a wonderful respite in an area that is going through change, redevelopment and suburbanization. Off the beaten track and not easy to find, this beach is located about 35 minutes from downtown Honolulu on the former Barber’s Point Naval Air Station. Once only accessible to military this beach is now open to all and has become quite popular with area residents and surfers. Flat and expansive the area is very uncongested and the roads leading to beach are old, worn and narrow. Although most of the roadways are lined with overgrown bush, and scampering mongooses, it is not unusual to see an occasional clumping of rare orange-yellow tinged Kaunaoa vines through the dry shrubbery.

The area, which is now called Kalaeloa, still supports an active airfield and the military still has exclusive use of the nearby golf course and recreational facilities. Nearby, refurbished naval housing is now being offered as rentals and a veteran’s center is located in former barracks buildings.

The beach has a wide and long expanse of white sand and a surf break that is perfect for novice or casual surfers, picnic areas, restrooms and even a snack shop. Lifeguards are stationed on the beach and the area has weekend campsites available for anyone through the City and County of Honolulu permitting process. This is not exactly a beach where small children can wade and wander with minimal supervision, it is a beach that has waves that break along the shoreline that can become exceedingly big and rough at times. But, regardless it is a beach that is quiet, never overcrowded and it a perfect spot to enjoy the sun and sea in a relatively unspoiled setting.
