Review

Opened in 1978 as a small family restaurant, Yanagi Sushi has grown and is a favorite restaurant for locals and tourists alike. This is especially true for the sushi-hungry night owls due to its late closing hours.

With two sushi bars, three to four master chefs, countless types of nigiri sushi and at least 15 kinds of sashimi, it is no wonder that this place is regularly voted one of the freshest sushi joints in Honolulu. That's hardly a surprise when you consider its impeccable food and convivial atmosphere. Sushi is outstanding, and the chefs take great pride in their skills.

Despite its name, Yanagi - meaning "slim" in Japanese - this restaurant offers the full range of Japanese cuisine. In addition to sushi, there are six additional pages on the menu serving shabu shabu (tabletop cooking in hot broth), tempura, teishoku (set menu full meals) and other cooked and raw Japanese specialties ranging from broiled fish to Tororo. One of the more popular non-sushi items is the chazuke which is described as a "comfort food of rice" with tea, salmon, seaweed, and other fresh condiments. Many guests boasted during my visit that the consistently crisp tempura and fine spicy ahi hand-roll make Yanagi worth remembering.

Complete dinners come with choices of sashimi, shrimp tempura, broiled salmon, New York steak, and many other possibilities. Since the menu is so extensive, you can dine here affordably or extravagantly. The drink menu is equally impressive, offering 11 varieties of sake as well as the traditional spirits offered with a full bar.

The dining area itself is fairly typical with the sushi bar, tables and private tatami rooms. Yanagi is also a favorite spot among both local and mainland celebrities, as evidenced by the abundant decorated photos that are proudly hung on t he entry walls. Indeed, due to Yanagi's popularity, the restaurant can be crowded during dinner, especially on the weekends so reservations are highly recommended. For bargains, however, enjoy Yanagi's during lunch take advantage of the combination bargains.
