Nasturtium Cafe is located on Mamalahoa Hwy. just south of the Aloha Theater in Kainaliu Town. Description: The Nasturtium Café opened in 2001 in an old converted barn. Located on the mauka side (mountain) the busy highway just south of Kainaliu town, the inside of the restaurant offers a quite, spacious escape. Decorated with local artwork diners can sit inside or outside, surrounded by Nastrurtium’s own garden, fruit trees and coffee trees. Owner and chef Diane Tomac-Campogan designed the Nasturtium Café to follow a specific mission: to create, cook and serve food that feeds the body and stimulates the senses. Not-your-typical organic café, the Nasturtium has an international flare, such as combining wheat-free breads with range-feed meat and garden fresh herbs. A lunch only establishment, Nasturtium specializes in soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts all made in-house, from scratch. The soups are all non-dairy and can be combined with a salad for a meal. Soup options featured are Roasted Red Pepper, Fresh Garden Vegetable with Pistou -- a French-style pesto, Mexican Corn and Gingered Carrot. The salads are all served with fresh baked Organic Spelt bread made in the restaurant’s bakery and organic produce grown in their own garden and in the garden’s of nearby farms. Some options are: Fresh Tuna or Ostrich Nicoise, a fresh seared Ahi or Ostrich tenderloins on a bed of organic lettuce and served with olives, cherry tomatoes, red potatoes, string beans, hard-boiled egg and topped with a honey mustard dressing. Other choices are the Chicken Potsticker and Roasted Red Pepper, Greek Feta or Gado Gado -- a tofu, vegetable, daikon, bean sprout medley topped with kaffir lime peanut sauce, and Greek Feta. All sandwiches come with a choice of Maui potato chips or organic greens and choices range from Burgers -- Buffalo, Ostrich or Fish served with vegetables on a spelt bun to Island Fish or Ostrich Quesadilla served with Pat’s Pineapple Salsa, Moroccan Chicken spiced and sliced and served in a spinach wrap, to Chevre Goat Cheese and Artichoke Wrap -- a sandwich with goat cheese, marinated artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, olive tapenade, grilled onions and lettuce wrapped in a herbed tortilla. The Nasturtium’s desserts are widely sought after in the community, featured at local functions and catered events. All desserts are made in the kitchen and range from a Chocolate Decadence cake to a wheat-free Gingered Organic Macadamia Nut Tart to assorted ice creams and sorbets. While the restaurant does not serve alcohol or beer they do encourage customers to bring their own or try any one of their freshly prepared herb and citrus fruit drinks, made with pesticide-free ingredients from their farm. Of course, 100 percent Kona coffee is served as well as natural sodas. An alternative to the traditional organic dinning, the Nasturtium Café is usually visited by vegetarian eaters and those interested in knowing exactly how and where their food is prepared. Many on non-dairy or wheat-free diets also eat here, pick up to-go orders or stop by to buy any number of their packaged desserts and breads such as Hawaiian Ginger Cookies, MacNut Chocolate Chip Cookies, Curry Quinoa Lavosh, Flax Seed Lavosh and an arrangement of Organic Spelt buns, pizza crusts and baguettes. Reservations are not necessary but recommended for large parties or parties intending on eating near closing hour. Parking is minimal but typically not a problem and there is no dress code. However, diners should note that the restaurant only accepts cash. Due to the amount of time and alternative ingredients used at the Nasturtium Café, prices are higher but reflect the amount of energy the locally-owned restaurant dedicates to their food, devoting themselves to feeding the body, mind and soul.
