Along Queen Kaahumanu Highway, just north of Waikoloa Rd. take a left at the Mauna Lani Resort entrance. Follow signs for the Fairmont Orchid Hotel. Description: Brunch is the new dinner. A beautiful spot to dine for an early or late breakfast occasion is at the Orchid Court at the Fairmont Orchid Hotel. Situated on the lawn of the hotel’s courtyard overlooking the ocean and shaded with palms, the outdoor dining room creates a tropical environment to accompany the tropical local food. On the inside ground-floor entrance next to the door of the Orchid Court there is a Koi pond decorated with an open skylight, palm trees, ferns and a waterfall. The backdrop to the pond is a mural of Haleakala and Mauna Kea, pointed in the direction of which the face, by local artist and hotel employee. The breakfast menu at the Orchid Court can be ordered ala cart or buffet style. The three buffet options include the Complete Buffet, the Continental Buffet and a Keiki option for children 6-12, children five and under eat for free. The buffet features a wide selection of traditional favorites such as bacon, chicken apple pork link, eggs, pancakes, waffles, bagels with lox and capers, cold and hot cereal, freshly baked pastries and muffins and made-to-order omelets. Regional specialties include rice, mango sausage, fish hash, fresh fish of the day, Miso soup and tsukemono, potato dish, rice and tropical fruit. Menu items include Banana-Macadamia Nut Waffles with fresh caramelized banana, sweetened cream cheese, coconut and maple syrup. There is the Kauai Shrimp Hash served with two poached Island eggs, Keahole lobster Veloute, organic spinach, crispy Maui onions, fresh asparagus and roasted tomato. Other local specials include the Pineapple Upside-down Pancakes and the Naalehu sweet bread French Toast. Breakfast favorites include the All-American breakfast option of: two eggs, choice of meat, fried potatoes or rice, choice of breakfast pastry or toast, juice, coffee or tea. The Paniolo is a grilled Angus New York steak with eggs, onions, vegetables, potatoes or rice. Eggs Benedict and Frittata are also options. Under the Lifestyle cuisine there are choices like the Ironman, which comes with an egg-white omelet filled with asparagus, tomato, basil, onion, mushroom, low-fat cheese and served with an oat bran muffin, low-fat yogurt and seasonal fruit. Other options are the Breakfast Quesadilla, Island Fruit Plate, Tropical Fruit Parfait, Chilled Local Papaya or the Hawaiian-Style Oatmeal; with caramelized banana, dried mango and drizzled with Puna-honey and Hawaiian Cinnamon. To wash it all down there are some pick-me-up options a Juice Bar -- with fruit smoothies and blended juices -- along with herbal teas and blended Kona coffee. Some morning eye openers include Pele’s Bloody Mary or a Tropical Mimosa. The Juice Bar offers a Morning Mango blend with yogurt, Hawaiian style fruit smoothie, a Healthy Drink of mixed berries, tropical fruit and passion-orange juice and an assortment of blended juices of the day. Dining at the Orchid Court reflects the class and upscale approach of the hotel’s atmosphere and prices of meals are accordingly marked. Diners are typically resort guests and nearby hotel residents. Dress should be appropriate, resort casual and reservations are not necessary. Written By: Hadley Catalano Map In This Category
