Located at the intersection of Mamalahoa Hwy. and Highway 11 at Honalo Junction. Description: It is easily one of the most recognizable names on the West side of Hawaii island. Teshima’s Restaurant has for generations been a staple restaurant up mauka in Kona. Serving traditional Japanese kaukau, the menu caters to the local community on a daily basis. Consistently crowded, the restaurant is owned and operated by the Teshima family, who had originally opened the main dinning area as a general merchandise store in 1929 and expanded it in 1940 to the restaurant it is today. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner Teshima’s combines popular Japanese dishes with some American fare. The casual, family atmosphere welcomes diners to a traditional home-cooked Japanese meal with a no-frills dinning area, bar and a formal Japanese upstairs dining room. The generous lunch and dinner portions and classic menu items are what have the locals lined up waiting outside on any given day. Popular traditional Japanese favorites such as Tsukemono (salted and pressed cabbage) and Sunomono (sweet sour cucumbers) and hot green tea come with most meals. Daily lunch specials offered range from Monday’s Sakura Tray -- a combination of sushi, beef teriyaki, fried fish and sashimi served with rice, Miso soup, Tsukemono, Sunomono and hot green tea to Friday’s Chazuke Tray -- with fried fish, beef teriyaki, egg roll and seasonal side dishes. Most options are included on both the lunch and dinner menus, non-traditional Japanese fare includes items such as the Sweet sour spareribs, ‘Kona Up-County’ Chop Steak, Butterfish (black cod), Homemade corned beef hash patties with fresh island-laid eggs and New York Steak. Sandwiches range from hamburgers and cheeseburgers to fillet of Ahi or Marlin ‘on a bun’ and all options come served with cooked vegetables, rice, Miso soup, Tsukemono and hot tea. The most popular lunch item at Teshima’s is the "Bento" a boxed lunch to go (also available to eat inside) which includes a choice of two or three rice balls -- luncheon meat, fried fish, teriyaki beef, Japanese egg roll, Tsukemono, and Sunomono. Teishoku lunch trays consist of Miso soup, sashimi, Sukiyaki, Tsukemono, Sunomono and rice. For dinner, a complimentary table starter of maki sushi is served (and refilled on some occasions) with hot green tea. The most frequently ordered items on the dinner menu include the No. 3 Teishoku tray of Miso Soup, Sashimi, Sukiyaki, Shrimp Tempura, Sunomono, Tsukemono and rice and the Shrimp or Vegetable Tempura. The tempura includes a wide range of local vegetables with a perfected tempura batter. Other choices include Oyaki Donburi with chicken, onion and eggs on rice, Teshima's omelet fried rice, Sukiyaki in-a-kettle, a large heaping portion of either chicken, beef or Portuguese sausage Fried Rice, Nabeyaki Udon in-a-kettle and Saimin -- a local style ramen noodle on a broth. Dinner combos are the Steak and Shrimp Tempura, Beef Teriyaki and Shrimp Tempura and ‘Deep Sea Trio’- with Shrimp Tempura, Sautéed Ahi and Sashimi all with rice, soup, Tsukemono, Sunomono and hot green tea. Fresh local pies such as apple, pumpkin or custard and local favorite ice creams such as green tea round out the menu. When eating at Teshima’s during the popular dinning hours, be prepared, as there might be a wait and plan to pay in cash, as the restaurant does not accept credit cards.
