Located just off Kuakini Highway, near the intersection of Sea View Circle, just south of Kailua-Kona. Description: As the only French restaurant on the Big Island, La Bourgogne has recreated the intimate, neighborhood feel of a Paris café with authentic and classic French cuisine to match. Having been established on the island for 14 years, owner and head chef Ron Gallaher has individually executed a personal dining experience for customers of particular French taste. Targeting a small, specialized clientele, La Bourgogne welcomes diners to a small dinning room featuring 10 tables surrounded by dark wallpaper offset by brick and stone walls. Decorations and the personal visit from the chef to each diners tables, offering wine pairing suggestions and specials of the day creates a personalize experience with the food. La Bourgogne offers an extensive selection of wines, highlighting different bottles or glasses to compliment any course of the meal. Wines listed come from the regions of Australia, Napa Valley and France and include Merlot, Red Bordeaux and Meritage and Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by a quote from Alex Dumas expressing the restaurant’s sentiment; " Wine is the intellectual part of the meal, meats are merely the material part." Les hors d’oeuvres froids et chauds, or cold and hot appetizers, welcome guests to sample a fine selection of French specialties including the Escargot de Bourgogne, snails from Burgundy with persile garlic butter. A popular option is the Brie au Four; a hearty portion of warmed Brie wrapped in a thin pastry shell and served with crouton bread and green apple slices. The Soups and Salads, Les Potages et les Salades, feature local fruits in a blend with French style salads. Salade Avocat et Crabe, is a unique combination formed in a mass of layers of tomato, avocado, mango and Dungeness crabmeat served mid-plate and dressed with lemon aioli. For entrees, La Bourgogne’s Seafood and Poultry, Les Poissons et Voiaille, options include selections such as scallops, lobster and duck. The meat, Les Veiandes, choices range but a classic dish is the Roti de Lapin a la Lavande, a roasted rabbit in a white wine sauce served with aromatic vegetables, rice pilaf and French lavender. Many of these French dishes can be filling but leaving room for dessert is highly recommended, as the chef prepares (in advance so let him know ahead of time) a chocolate mousse served hot with warm cream. Other sweet treats include a lemon tartlette, chocolate stuffed poached pear with port sauce and a crème brulee. There is a wide assortment of after dinner drinks that offer pairing suggestions with selected desserts. Most of La Bourgogne’s customers are locals who are frequent visitors to the restaurant, seeking out the fine French fare and knowing that the price range is comparable. Occasionally tourists will stop in for a special evening, but on any given night the chef knows the majority of the diners personally. Reservations are reccommended as seating is limited.
