Take Queen Kaahumanu Highway ( #19) north of Kailua-Kona. At mile marker 87 take a left onto Kukio Nui Drive. Follow Public Beach Access signs.
Description:
Kukio Bay runs in a long white ribbon of sand from its southern tip at Kikaua Point at the Kukio Point Park up to the tip of the 1801 lava flow at the Hualalai resort. At its southern border, Kukio beach is located at the end of the grounds of the Kukio oceanfront residential community. As with many resorts along the west Hawaii coast, there is a gated entrance. Let the staff member know that you are going to the Public Beach access and he will give you a pass to place on your windshield. There is limited parking spaces at the beach so be advised. Once you go through the gate almost immediately take a left onto Maniniowali Drive. Follow the Public Beach Access signs through the resort to the parking lot adjacent to the water. The beach access is nicely designed with a paved walking path through the lava rock to the shore. The shoreline is fairly rocky but at the southern most point of the beach, just south of Kikaua Point is a walled in wading pool with clear blue waters that is ideal of children and adults alike. The wall forms a natural protective barrier from the surf and currents and many families come here to relax and enjoy the calm waters. The sand space is large, clear, white and inviting. The landscaping around the resort, which meets the sandy shore, provides ample trees and plenty of shade.
Kikaua Point is known for its good fishing off the cliffs and beautiful scenic sunsets. Here there is a green lawn that has been the location of many a wedding ceremony, party, or local gathering. Further north along the beach, the bay semi-circles its way up through the resort at Hualalai. Within this sandy cove of the bay there is good places to swim and snorkel. This location is where the resort provides its customers with many water options and its never surprising to encounter a few catamarans, outrigger canoes, jet skis or other recreational activities throughout the bay. The beach winds along the coast and fronts the public access at the Four Season Hualalai Resort, this low-lying beach is lined with rocks, offering few suitable points for swimming, Fishing is popular along the sections and is part of the Kukio/Hualalai Fishery. During the winter months there are some occasional waves that attract the attention of local surfers and body boarders.
Set back a ways from the shore Kukio is home to a number of small brackish ponds, namely Waiakauhi pond and the backshore is covered with coconut, kiawe, ironwood and other Hawaiian trees. To access Kukio beach from Hualalai Resort, turn left off Queen Kaahumanu Highway at Kaupulehu Drive and travel down the road a ways to the Four Seasons and follow the public beach access signs.
