Corner of Kilauea and Keawe Streets in downtown Hilo. Description: Hilo is not known for it’s fine dining establishments, nor for a wide selection of non-Asian ethnic food choices. Pescatore is one exception to this rule. Situated in downtown Hilo, this eatery offers the feel of a typical Italian neighborhood restaurant, with art on the walls, lace curtains on the windows and dark wood touches throughout. With no window views to remind you of where you are, visiting this spot will make you feel like you are thousands of miles from anything tropical. This can be a nice addition to your itinerary if you feel the need for a traditional experience while enjoying our island paradise. Pescatore is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Prices are comparable to hotel restaurant meals but with a wider selection and superior quality, plus an atmosphere that compliments the menu. Breakfast choices include a superior frittata, the Italian version of an omelet, with a wide choice of fillings. The expansive lunch menu includes many items off the dinner menu for just about half the price. Pizzas are hand-tossed and baked in the restaurant’s own pizza oven and the pasta selections are prepared on site. The Chicken Marsala is the best this side of San Francisco’s North Beach! While pricier than most Hilo eateries, the menu choices are also far more varied than any others you will find on this side of the island. On the Kona side, you might find a similar menu at one of the large resorts, but just imagine the comfort of sitting down to marinated, grilled lamb chops or a steaming bowl of traditional Cioppino on a cool, rainy Hilo evening, rather than at a hot, dry Kohala Coast mega-hotel. Friendly wait staff, daily specials, a varied wine selection and an unconventional menu by East Hawaii standards make Pescatore an easy choice for those seeking something different and special, yet familiar, when visiting Hilo.
