Description:
True to the statement on it’s menu, Miyo’s is "A very home style Japanese restaurant". Located in the Waiakea Villas Hotel complex at the end of Hualani Street, this charming bit of Japan is truly located off the beaten path in a location that feels like you have stumbled onto it while wandering the side streets of Tokyo. Taking the stairs one flight up from the parking lot, you will find high, open-beamed wooden ceilings, open windows to let in the breeze wafting off Waiakea fishpond below, open kitchen, wait staff hustling among the simple wooden tables, and lots of local clientele.

The food beats out the wonderful location and ambiance. The menu will cater to almost any taste, so try Miyo’s, even if you have a fear of Japanese food. There are several purely vegetarian options available, from sauteed to Tempura, which is light and crisp, to accent the fresh vegetable flavor, rather than to mask it. The daily salmon special was moist, fresh, broiled to crispy perfection and not fishy in the least. The sauteed squid and eggplant was so good that a fish-hater was converted to a lover of this delicate shellfish, which was prepared so that the squid was as tender as perfectly cooked pasta. Ahi sashimi was as fresh as any found in Hilo. Many beef and chicken options are available for the fish-phobic. The sesame chicken was spicy, crisp and plentiful. All entrees are served with a flavorful and artfully presented salad and wonderfully subtle miso soup, rumored to be the best on the Big Island. The service can be hurried if the dining area is crowded, and our waitress was difficult to understand through her heavily accented English. However, she triple-checked our order before heading back to the kitchen and all meals were presented exactly as requested.

No alcohol is served at Miyo’s, which helps to keep the ambient noise at a very quiet level. Lunch and dinner offer the same selections, with dinner priced only slightly higher than lunch, which is a bargain compared to more well known, tourist-oriented eateries around town. If you come at opening time at either meal, you should have little problem getting a good table with a wonderful view of Waiakea pond and blue Hilo Bay beyond.
