969 Kilauea Avenue, between Kekuanaoa Street and Aupuni Street Description: Why does traffic on Kilauea Avenue always seem to back up for a block or so each week day around lunch time? It’s the constant stream of cars turning into the parking lot of Café 100, a Hilo institution since 1946. Richard and Evelyn Miyashiro named their restaurant in honor of the famed 100th Infantry Army Battalion, in which Mr. Miyashiro served during World War II. The 100th Battalion was the most decorated American unit in all of World War II.
This longevity tells the whole story. On the Big Island, good food, low prices and substantial portions are the requirements for a loyal and consistent following, and Café 100 has these, in addition to quick, friendly service and a varied menu that will fit almost any taste. You’ll remember the "ono grinds" at this spot and, most likely, you will return for more. At about half the price of a fast-food, drive-through restaurant lunch, why not come back again and again. The selection of "loco moco" alone fills a large portion of the menu board. This staple, served statewide, is rumored to have gotten its name here. Whether this is fact or not, Café 100 certainly provides the widest array of this local favorite to be found anywhere. Designed to fill you up, the Loco Moco, which is far tastier than it may appear, consists of a bed of two scoops of rice. Top this with a meat of your choosing, which could be bacon, Portugese Sausage, a grass-fed island beef hamburger patty, fish, stew, chili, the ever-present Spam or any number of other options. Top this with savory gravy and egg, usually sunny-side up, and your hunger will be sated for hours. For the ultimate in local flavor, try the Ox Tail soup or tripe stew, both of which fly off the counters in to-go containers as office workers haul loads of the stuff back to waiting co-workers in every corner of town. There is plenty of "mainland style" food, as well. Burgers and sandwiches can satisfy the most staid palate, the fries are superb and there is a child’s menu. Most seating is outdoors, which is kept spick and span, along with every other spot in view. The employees are also immaculate, as well as efficient and courteous So, drop in and try something tasty at this Hilo hot spot. With prices that appear to be throwbacks to yesteryear, you won’t find any food cheaper than this, nor more satisfying. It’s a good bet that you’ll be back more than once.
