Quinn’s, who, according to their slogan, is Almost by the Sea, offers a surf and turf style fare to match their ambiance. Upon entering the restaurant visitors are greeted with a small fisherman’s wharf-style bar, usually occupied by locals catching up with one another and tourists catching up on the game or the local scene. The bar sits separate but adjacent to the waiting area of the restaurant. Depending on the day and season there might be a short wait for a table but typically, between the indoor and outdoor seating customers are seated quickly. The outdoor seating is unique and reflective of the Big Island scenery. A handful of tables sit inside the lining of a large lava rock wall on one side and a decorative lava rock flower-bed on the other, complete with Ti plants and soft lighting and since the restaurant lies in downtown Kailua-Kona, as their name says, you can almost hear the waves of the ocean breaking against the shore. Though it’s not the mood or landscaping of this restaurant that attracts both tourists and locals, it’s the large variety of meal options and portions that make Quinn’s a popular spot for the hungry.

Open for lunch and dinner the menu begins with a variety of pupus, a common term used in Hawaii for appetizers. Options include Sashimi (when available), Fried Zucchini, Broiled Steak Tips, Crab Stuffed Mushrooms and Deep Fry Pork Egg Rolls to name a few. These appetizers are intended to feed a large group, as portions are hefty. Quinn’s continues with their surf and turf in their Soup and Salad selection, offering Ahi, Mahi or Ono Salad, Broiled Shrimp Salad, Chicken Salad and Clam Chowder. There are eight options of Hamburgers including a Hawaiian Teri Burger that comes topped with teriyaki sauce, cheddar cheese and grilled pineapple and a Quinn’s Burger, which is a beef pattie topped with cream cheese and avocado. All burgers are served on an onion bun with lettuce, tomato and onion and with a choice of fries or salad.

Sandwiches and Specialties included a wide selections of fish, meat and vegetable options including a Kona Gold sandwich, a Snow crab mix on sourdough and grilled until golden brown and a Deluxe Vege Sandwich that includes avocado, artichoke hearts, tomato, lettuce, tomato, cheese on a wheat roll. Quinn specialties are some of the island’s best deep fried fish dishes including the Fish and Shrimp Combo, a combination of three fresh fish and two shrimp fried in Quinn’s batter. All sandwiches and specialties are served with a choice of fries, rice or salad. Rounding out the end of the menu are Quinn’s Dinner Entrée, only served between 5-10 p.m. An assortment of plates includes Catch of the Day, Shrimp Scampi, 8 oz. Filet Mignon and Teriyaki Chicken. Quinn’s notes that each day local fisherman bring their catch in from the waters of Kona directly to their restaurant and all fish dishes can be prepared broiled or sautéed. All entrée meals are served with Soup or Salad and a vegetable as well as a choice of steamed rice, potatoes, fries or garlic linguini.

If you are still hungry after your meal, there are dessert options available, just ask your wait staff. It should be noted that Quinn's as very minimal parking but parking is avaible across the street in the King Kamehameha hotel lot. Make sure to bring your parking ticket into the restaurant to get validated. So before heading to Quinn’s Almost by the Sea, dress comfortably and make sure to bring your appetite.

Quinn's is a great place to eat. The servers are top notch and the food is served fresh. Their drinks run the gambit from standard bar fare to the exotic tropical. Their grilled ahi burger is served on an onion bun and worth the trip as are their fried onion rings... we love it...
