Representing one of just a handful of organic eateries on the Big Island, Evie’s Organic Café has carved a niche for itself with the all-natural consumption habits of many Hawaii residents. Sandwiched between the busy little town of Kainaliu and the plentiful gardens and farms of mauka Kona, Evie’s reaps the benefits of it’s neighbors’ garden beds, but mainly harvests and uses it’s own Evie’s Farm fresh greens, herbs and other produce.
While the faire is primarily vegetarian there are free-range turkey and fresh fish options available. Open from breakfast till dinner, the menu is a hearty mix of omelets, wraps, sandwiches, fishplates, soups, salads, smoothies and desserts. Customers can find the small deli at the back of Evie’s Natural Food Store, facing the Kona coast. The café’s lanai welcomes diners with a small open-air veranda and an order-at-the-counter style service. Prepared fresh to order, each meal is made by a small deli staff and customers can either pick up their order to go or eat a one of the tables.
Breakfast time options include a variety of sized waffle and pancake meals, veggie and cheese omelet, egg and veggie scramble, organic tofu scramble, seasonal fruit plate and a grilled local fishplate. Sides offered are turkey sausage patties, Fak’in Bacon, brown rice or whole wheat or Ezekiel toast with cheese, avocado, salsa, sour cream, sesame tahini, peanut butter or jam/jelly extras.
During the lunch hours, up until 4 p.m., there is a selection of cold sandwiches and wraps, including a Diestel free range turkey breast, Wild Alaskan red salmon spread, Dolphin safe Albacore white tuna, tofu teriyaki, garden veggie wrap or tofu scramble wrap. All sandwiches come on a choice of a whole wheat bun, multi-grain, dark rye, flourless Ezekiel or whole wheat tortilla with toppings of lettuce, sprouts, tomato, red onion, veganaise and mustard. Evie’s home style soups and farm fresh salads are available through the dinner hour and include a Tostada salad, a large salad bar as well as hot soups of the day. Daily soup options are the veggie chili and Miso, in a trio of sizes. The hot meals, available for both lunch and dinner feature four fresh fish options, a meatless riblet sandwich, a Fak’in Bacon BLT, a Maui Taro burger, BOCA burger, grilled cheese sandwich, and a 9-inch pizza with basil sauce, tomato, onion and cheese on a spelt crust. A vegan option, without the cheese, is also available. Also the "veggie" extravaganza offers a platter of fresh steamed seasonal organic vegetables with lemon tahini sauce and served with brown rice. These two meals require a longer preparation and cook time. Evie’s Organic Café also specializes in fresh organic juices and all-organic smoothies. Juices available are organic DETOX Drink, organic carrot, carrot, apple, beet and orange and tangelo; when in season. Smoothie choices give the customer a range from berries such as raspberry, strawberry and blueberry to local fruits such as papaya and banana. Add-in extras are bee pollen, yogurt, Macadamia nut butter, protein powder, Green Power E-3 Live or Spirulina.
Along with a few more drink options such as milkshakes and 100 percent Kona Coffee, Evie’s Organic Café is perhaps best known for it’s award-winning desserts such as the Chocolate Dream Cake and other wheat-free organic treats such as lilikoi or coconut Tapioca, apple crisp and an arrangement of fresh baked brownies, bars and cookies. The clientele is typically locals and mauka Kona friends and neighbors. There is an influx of tourists that stop at the café, some interested in health food, others seeking an alternative from the Hawaiian diet.
