Review

It’s the perfect Hawaiian dining experience. Sitting on the shore of the Kohala coast, gazing out over the vast Pacific, with waves lapping against the sand, palm trees leaning out over the water’s edge and the sounds of music playing in the background. The temperature is warm with a light island breeze and what better place to eat and enjoy the tastes of the island while enjoying its natural beauty.

Award-winning restaurant Brown’s Beach House offers all the perks of fine dining with prompt service; attentive wait staff and a variety of premiere courses. Serving both lunch and dinner at the pool and ocean side Fairmount Orchid hotel location, the menu attracts both tourists and residents alike. Dinning is completely outdoors with covered or uncovered options and showcases the Beach Houses’ culinary team with a wide window view of the newly renovated exhibition kitchen. The island-inspired cuisine offers diners at lunch a selection of Starters such as Pan-Seared Hawaiian-style Crab Cakes and Kiawe-Grilled Chicken Quesadilla. Salad and Pizza options feature the Kohala Chicken Salad and pizzas like the Grilled Chicken Pizza with Hamakua Goat Cheese. For the main Island Favorite lunches include the Lobster Fried Rice with Keahole Lobster and Shitake Mushrooms or the Fresh Catch Sandwich or Brown’s Beach House Gourmet Burger, a special blend of Black Angus sirloin and Kobe-style beef with glazed Maui onion, Waimea tomato and melted Brie cheese on a homemade bun. Dinner guests are accompanied by nightly entertainment on the patio lawn. Hawaiian duos Nino and Kevin or Grant and Moku complete with a hula dancer set the background mood in the light of the tiki torches and setting sun.

The dinner menu begins with appetizer options such as the Hamakua Mushrooms En Croute, the Guava-Braised Boneless Beef Short Ribs and salads like the Big Island Salad, a combination of local baby field green, Waimea tomato, cucumber jicama, hearts of palm, croutons with a tarragon vinaigrette.

Entrees emphasize the local fresh seafood with choices such as the Crab Crusted Hawaiian Snapper and the Wok-Seared Nori Wrapped Big Island Ahi, a fresh Ahi role with shoy sambal, basil vinaigrette and served with broccolini and a cucumber lobster namasu. The menu also features meat options like the Roast Kurobata Pork Tenderloin and Kaffir Lime Scented Organic Chicken Breast and vegetarian fare such as the Fresh Linguine with Big Island Goat Cheese and the Mahogany Glazed Tofu, a tofu dish with Hamakua mushrooms, Waimea tomatoes, mushroom soy sauce and served with asparagus and steamed Jasmine rice. The portions are appropriately sized and the meals are combined with the right amount of sides and toppings, leaving the customer full but not uncomfortable. But, if there is room left for dessert the selection of Mud Pie, Baked Hawaiian Vintage Chocolate Mousse Cake, Roasted Banana Tiki and assorted list of dessert wines, ports and cognacs would make a fine end of the meal.

While the price at Brown’s Beach House does echo the atmosphere, the dining attire reflects the environment. Guests are suggested to wear casual pool and beach attire during the day and casual resort attire while visiting the restaurant during the evening.
