Review

Known for its beautiful sunsets, ocean views and water front location overlooking Magic Sands Beach, Jameson’s By The Sea is always a mark on the tourist dinning checklist. The variety of fresh local seafood is the main reason tourists visit the location but should be noted that prices sit higher than most area restaurants.

The indoor and lanai dinning rooms seats are the most popular and highly reccomended as the indoor dinning does not hold the same experience. Call ahead for a reserved table. A well-rehearsed list of daily specials is offered upon the waitstaffs’ initial visit to the table. Later a bartender comes around taking drink orders. The atmosphere is comfortable, relaxing as the sounds of waves crash, while watching the cruise ships sail by and the body boarders and surfers catch their last sets of the day, as the orange glow of the sun sets behind the horizons. Open daily for dinner and weekdays for lunch, the restaurant prizes itself on it’s mainly fish menu. All featured seafood is caught directly from the Hawaiian waters and are served using locals recipes. Fish options include: Au, a swordfish; Ahi, albacore or yellowfin tuna; Ono, a white fish from the Mackerel family and Opakapaka or Onaga, Pacific Snappers.

All appetizer options are seafood dishes (except the Stuffed Mushrooms), including Sashimi, Shrimp Cocktail, Salmon Pate and a popular favorite the Crab Stuffed Mushrooms, a hot plate of four sizeable mushroom caps stuffed with crab meat and topped in a warm Hollandaise sauce.

Feature salads, not the restaurant's speciality, offer dinners a free from fish choice, including a green salad, a tomato and Maui onion and a Ceasar salad. Entrée portions come with a choice of steamed white rice, garlic linguine, oriental fried rice or steamed red bliss potatoes and a selection of fresh steamed vegetables.

All local fishes can be found on the entrée menu featuring a variety of specialty sauces to be served in. The Pink Snapper comes with a choice of garlic Hollandaise or a black bean sauce. The Ono and Ahi are served with a choice of Cajun spice, teriyaki or dill tartar sauce. Though, if you ask, accommodating waiters will offer both selections, served on the side, so dinners can sample both and personally selection the flavor they most prefer.

While the fish is definitely Jameson’s highlight as most dinner guests are tourists eager to try the local island aquatic cuisine, some long time residents will stop by to dine and perhaps opt for the Lobster tail, Filet Mignon or a cleverly designed Asian take to fish, serving a good portion of shrimp in a delicious mild curry sauce with mango chutney and a hearty side portion of cashew nuts. Desserts feature the island's harvest including homemade passion orange, lemon Mac nut, or chocolate chiffon pies. As well as a Macadamia Nut pie, cheesecakes, and keep an ear open for daily special desserts as the have a tendency to be a delightfully sweet end to the meal.

The lunch menu is similar but features a host of salads and hot and cold sandwiches. There are parking options available at the restaurant and if the small lot if full there is parking across the street. Dress is resort casual but proper clothing is required. If you’re visiting Jameson’s for the first time on the Big Island it might sound familiar, it does have a sister location on the North Shore of Oahu in Haleiwa.

Would like to buy a gift certificate for friends visting the Big Island in late February early March. Do you have a process where I could give you a credit card number over the phone, and you could mail me a gift certificate?
Thanks.
