There seems to be a story behind every restaurant and Don the Beachcomber isn’t any different. Donn Beach, as his name became, was the founding father of the so-called Polynesian restaurants in the 1930s. What would eventually become known as Tiki restaurants enjoyed a tremendous burst of popularity in the 1950 when several Beachcomber restaurants opened up offering rum cocktails in a tropically decorated bar and serving what seemed like exotic cuisines, but what were actually standard Cantonese dishes served with flair.
The Big Island is home to one of Donn’s establishments at the Royal Kona Resort in Kailua-Kona. The restaurant sits on the waterfront overlooking Kailua bay. Arriving near the sunset hour for dinner paints a beautiful picture of the orange-red sun setting on the water while waiters light tiki torches and candles to encourage the mood. The food served is reflective of the tropical island paradise and many local fish and traditional Hawaiian cooking styles are used. The wait staff is friendly and attentive and promptly arriving at the table with water, fresh hot focaccia bread with seasoned butter and a hearty slice of pineapple. For appetizers Coco Prawns, Big Island Sashimi and Seared Peppered Ahi are classic dishes. The Ahi is a loin slice coated with cracked black pepper and spices seared rare. It comes served with Sake shoyu, pickled ginger, sea salad and a pineapple-ginger coconut wasabi sauce.
Soups and Greens are served in large portions and sharing is always encouraged. Popular salad options include the The Big Island Cobb salad, with mixed greens, grape tomatoes, sweet Maui onions, bacon, gorgonzola cheese, hard boiled egg, cheddar cheese, avocado, toasted leeks and coconut served in a toasted tortilla bowl with their own mango citrus vinaigrette. Another green dish that captures the island flavors is the Kahuna Don’s Island Breeze Salad -- a mixed green base with fresh papaya, mango, pineapple, avocado and roasted pecans tossed with a mango blue cheese dressing. Under Don’s favorite 'entree' items include meat dishes as well as pasta, chicken and fish. The Bamboo Chop Stick brings all the Polynesian favorites together on one plate. A center cut pork chop, cooked to order comes served with fried plantain bananas, spicy mango chutney and wild mushrooms. Heaped on the side are baby red potatoes and leeks in an island garlic and rosemary dressing.
Another favorite is the Don’s Famous Genghis Khan New York Steak Kabob which is New York steak cubes marinated with fresh herbs, garlic and truffle oil. Skewered with fresh golden pineapple, red bell pepper and button mushrooms. Broiled to perfection and topped with secret Gorgonzola sauce, this plate come served with lomi lomi rice and sautéed vegetables and accompanied by a side of Ponzu Shabu sauce. Dessert options are available and include tropical fruit favorite dishes like Mango Cheesecake and Crème Brulee with fresh fruit. Other dinner features include a Dinner for Two menu. A daily menu that offers a Sampler appetizer and a choice of meat, chicken or fish entrée with Molten Lava Torte for dessert and a bottle of house wine. While Don’s specializes in dinners they also have a daily breakfast and lunch menu. Lunch is served in the adjacent Mai Tai Bar.
Don’s breakfast buffet is one of the most popular in Kona and includes Belgian waffles, cooked-to-order omelets as well as A-la-carte menu items.
Complimenting this attractive fare, the new exhibition show kitchen, local floral arrangements festive tiki-decorated dinning room and open-air lanai seating attract guests from all over. Patrons are usually dressed in casual evening ware and are welcome to enjoy Don The Beachcomber’s fine food and creative liberations.
